Why are roofing granules so important?
Those little gritty roof granules is what protects the underlying membrane of the shingle. The granules can be of all different colors to give each home its unique curb appeal. Roofing granules protect the membrane from outside elements, especially UV rays which are most damaging to the shingle. If you’ve ever stuck your hand in a gutter you may have noticed some of these granules inside. This is the amount that comes off with rain and wind. So imagine what any type of pressure washing could do to a roof. We never use any type of power washing on a roofing shingle. We use a NON-pressure roof cleaning system which utilizes a foaming roof detergent. This detergent is comprises of 4 parts: Salt, chorination, a surfactant (foam), and water. Since we approach the stain like “pest control” we are seeking a 100% kill ratio. This method is opposed to pressure washing which only blasts live mold spores everywhere plus dislodges large amounts of roofing granules. Never let anyone use any type of pressure washing device on your roof. Any roof shingle manufacturer can substantiate this suggestion.
